Composer, trumpeter, producer, DJ and founder of Gondwana Records, Matthew Halsallhas always worn many hats. But at the heart of everything that he does Halsall is first and foremost an artist and a musician. Episode 142 – Justin Wren

Justin Wren

A champion Greco-Roman wrestler, Justin Wren is an American humanitarian worker and a professional mixed martial artist. Having fought for himself as an MMA fighter for his entire life, Justin urges us to use the tools around us to Fight For The Forgotten. A professional competitor since 2006, Wren has also formerly competed for the UFC, and was a cast member of SpikeTV’s The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights.

His life changed when he traveled to Congo to help the Pygmies. This ethnic group, indigenous to Africa, is preyed upon by armed rebels, being killed, raped and even eaten. Justin is now working with a Pygmy people in southwestern Uganda with the plan to take them from near extinction to a thriving, self-sufficient people. Today Justin “The Big Pygmy” Wren has expanded his Fight for the Forgotten to empower all those who don’t have a voice. He regularly speaks to raise awareness for those affected by the water crisis, as well as those who are bullied, and those suffering from depression and addiction. Following a six-year struggle with addiction and depression in his early career, Justin stepped away from MMA to seek out purpose and passion for his life. What he found was a forgotten tribe of Mbuti Pygmies deep in the jungles of the Congo, beaten down by economic enslavement, disease, and hopelessness. Through his Fight For The Forgotten initiative, 1,500 members of this formerly enslaved people group are now free and flourishing on 3,000 acres of their own land with access to clean water and their own farms. Today Fight For The Forgotten is working with a community of Batwa Pygmies in Uganda supporting them with clean water, latrines, housing and agricultural tools and seed for farming with the dream of them one day in the not-to-far future becoming self-sufficient, going from extinction to thriving.

Episode 140 – David Bronner

David Bronner

David Bronner is an American corporate executive and activist. As the top executive at Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, he has become known for his activism around a range of issues, especially fair trade, sustainable agriculture, animal rights, and drug policy reform.

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps has supported causes related to drug policy reform, animal rights, organic labeling, sustainable agriculture, and fair trade practices. Roughly 10 percent of the company’s revenue goes to charitable giving and activist causes annually. Organizations that have been supported under Bronner’s leadership include the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (for which Bronner serves on the board of directors), and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

A particular target of Bronner’s activism has been efforts to protect the hemp industry in the United States. Under his leadership in 2001, the company funded and coordinated with the Hemp Industry Association on its lawsuit against the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), seeking to prevent a ban of hemp food sales in the United States. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals granted a stay in the case in 2002 and ruled in favor of the hemp industry in 2004.

Bronner has been arrested twice for civil disobedience while protesting limitations on the domestic production of hemp. In 2009, he was arrested for planting hemp seeds on the lawn at DEA headquarters. In 2012, he was arrested after harvesting hemp and milling hemp oil while locked in a metal cage in front of the White House. In 2015 he was named Cannabis Activist of the Year by the Seattle Hempfest.

In 2014 Bronner wrote an advertorial drawing attention to the ways that GMO crops have led to increased pesticide use in the United States. It was initially published as a short article in the Huffington Post and subsequently as an ad in various wide-circulation magazines, ranging from The New Yorker to Scientific American. Two leading journals, Science and Nature, refused to carry the ad, in at least one case due to concern over backlash from the GMO industry.

In 2019, David Bronner pledged his company’s matching contribution of $150,000 to Oregon’s statewide ballot initiative to legalize psilocybin-assisted therapy.

Sergio Magaña “Ocelocoyotl” is a world-renown mystic, healer, and teacher of the Nahuatl tradition. Although raised in a traditional Catholic home in Mexico, Magaña was surrounded by ancient Mexican spiritual practices from the time he was a child. Later, he was initiated into the 5,000-year-old lineage of Mesoamerica as well as the Toltec dreaming oral tradition, which has been handed down for 1,460 years.

Episode 127 – Dr. Ted Achacoso

Ted Achacoso

Dr. Ted Achacoso earned his college degree in Biology at the age of 18 and his Doctor of Medicine degree at the age of 22. At 25, he was a fellow of interventional neuroradiology, a research professor of pharmacology and toxicology, and a clinical professor of neurology in Manila. At 28, he became a professor of medical informatics and of interventional neuroradiology in Washington, DC, where he also performed artificial intelligence research biased towards connectionist systems. At 30, he began science and technology consulting for socially responsible investment funds. At 35, he founded and ran a group collaboration software company and created the first wireless groupware. At 40 he traded currencies using artificial intelligence predictive techniques for a private fund. At 45, he retrained in Interventional Endocrinology (Anti-Aging Medicine) and in Nutritional Medicine in Paris, and became double board-certified in both specialties. Dr. Ted wrote the first-ever connectome (of C. elegans) in a book, is published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, holds US patents and software algorithms, provides TV and podcast interviews, and delivers lectures. Sarah Neufeld is an internationally renowned Canadian violinist and composer based in New York City. Best known as a long time member of Arcade Fire, she is also a founding member of the contemporary instrumental ensemble Bell Orchestre.

Sarah began developing pieces for solo violin in a formal sense in 2011. Violin driven, emotive and minimalistic, her influences range from Bartok, to Arthur Russel, to Aphex Twin. Neufeld’s acclaimed debut album Hero Brother (Constellation Records), produced by Nils Frahm, was released in 2013. Episode 91 – Paul Selig

Paul Selig is considered to be one of the foremost spiritual channels working today. Trudy Goodman Kornfield, Ph.D., is a vipassana teacher in the Theravada lineage and the Founding Teacher of InsightLA. She also teaches residential retreats at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA, Big Bear Retreat Center, and Insight Meditation Society in Barre, MA, among others.

Trudy has trained in two fields: meditation and psychotherapy. She had the privilege of studying developmental psychology with Jean Piaget, Lawrence Kohlberg, and Carol Gilligan. For 25 years, in Cambridge, MA, Trudy practiced mindfulness-based psychotherapy with children, teenagers, couples and individuals. The fourth teacher ever of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Trudy taught with its creator, Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn in the early days of the MBSR clinic at University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. In 1995 she co-founded, and continues to serve as Guiding Teacher for, the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy, the first center in the world dedicated to integrating these two disciplines.

Since 1974, Trudy devoted much of her life to practicing Buddhist meditation with revered Asian and Western teachers in the Zen and Theravada traditions, including Zen Master Seung Sahn, Kobun Chino Otagawa Roshi, Maurine Stuart Roshi, Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzberg and other Vipassana teachers. From 1991 to 1998, Trudy was a resident Zen teacher at the Cambridge Buddhist Association. She teaches with Jack Kornfield, Kate Lila Wheeler, InsightLA teachers she has mentored (Beth Sternlieb, Christiane Wolf) Anam Thubten, and other beloved teachers.

Trudy conducts retreats and workshops worldwide. She is a contributing author of Clinical Handbook of Mindfulness (Springer, 2008); Compassion and Wisdom in Psychotherapy, (Guilford Press, 2011); and Mindfulness and Psychotherapy, (Guilford Press, 2013).

Episode 88 – Nick Mulvey

London-based songwriter Nick Mulvey already had a wealth of musical knowledge before coming to the fore with a solo project in 2012, with years of formal education in Havana, Cuba studying music and art, as well as being an active member in Mercury Award nominees Portico Quartet. His first musical interactions were with piano and drums before he acquired a guitar in Southern Spain at the age of 18. He moved to Cuba a year later, and returned to the U.K. to study ethnomusicology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, submerging himself in different styles of music but specializing in West and Central African in particular. It was during this time that Mulvey met his Portico Quartet bandmates in 2005, where he played the Hang. After a successful stint with the outfit — which included a Mercury Prize nomination in 2008, 150 shows worldwide, and signing to Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records — Mulvey decided it was time to leave in 2011 and return to his first inspiration, the guitar.

With an abundance of genres at his fingertips, Mulvey set about creating a sound that was both striking and unique, intertwining influences of great musicians such as Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, and Tom Waits with a variety of African styles, including guitarist Kawele. This resulted in the sweet melodies and rhythmic strumming patterns that can be heard on his Fever to the Form EP, which was produced by Dan Carey (Steve Mason, Bat for Lashes) and released in 2013. In the meantime, he supported the likes of Willy Mason, Lianne La Havas, and Laura Marling on tour. Mulvey’s full-length debut, First Mind, arrived in 2014 via Universal’s Fiction and Harvest Records. It became a Top Ten album in the U.K. as well as a Mercury Prize nominee. His second LP was recorded live in the studio with his band and producer Ethan Johns before being passed along to Carey for the finishing electronic touches. Titled Wake Up Now, it was released in mid-2017 and addressed topics including the refugee crisis. Dancing for the Answers, a four-track EP, followed in 2018. Episode 85 – Mona Haydar

Mona Haydar is a young Syrian-American Muslim who gained national and international press for her and her husband’s “Ask A Muslim” project- a booth that invited dialogue and questions in the wake of the Paris and San Bernardino terrorist attacks. The Boston Globe, NPR, People Magazine, The New York Times and others all covered the project and the collaborations that followed. In 2017 she broke into the hip hop music scene with Hijabi (Wrap My Hijab) whose video- featuring Haydar seven months pregnant with her second son- went viral. Billboard Magazine named Haydar’s track one of the top feminist anthems of all time (alongside hits by icons Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, and M.I.A).

For the last four years, Mona has been performing her poetry and music, leading writing and activism workshops, and speaking at universities and colleges about art, Islam, feminism, hip hop, theology, and inter-faith dialogue. She has performed internationally, spoken at churches, synagogues and conferences, and has been invited to speak at such institutions as Smith College, MIT, Princeton, UC Berkeley and the Parliament of World Religions.

The Houston multi-instrumentalist Matt Kidd, who writes pastoral, deeply felt compositions as Slow Meadow. Episode 77 – Laraaji

American musician Laraaji is one of new age’s most distinctive, prolific, and charismatic artists. Since first gaining exposure in the early ’80s after a chance meeting with ambient innovator Brian Eno, who produced the landmark release Ambient 3: Day of Radiance (1980), Laraaji has released countless cassettes and albums, ranging from the mantra-like synth pop of Vision Songs, Vol. 1 (1984) to the extended drones of 1987’s Essence/Universe. A master of multiple instruments, Laraaji primarily constructs his lengthy, meditative soundscapes from an electronically altered zither, hammered dulcimer, kalimba, synthesizers, piano, and other instruments, as well as natural sounds and vocals. Additionally, he has collaborated with several electronic, experimental, rock, and dub musicians, including Japanese dub crew Audio Active (The Way Out Is the Way In, 1995), Bill Laswell (Divination’s Sacrifice, 1998), and Philadelphia duo Blues Control (FRKWYS Vol. 8, 2011). In addition to his musical career, he is well known for his Laughter Meditation Workshops.

Episode 71 – The Story Of 10 Laws

In this episode East Forest tells the story of how his eponymous song, “10 Laws” came to be. “10 Laws” features the voice of VCJ, a mystic and friend who spoke his hunter gatherers code of ten which became the sample for “10 Laws” – the first East Forest song and most popular East Forest track to date.

Episode 59 – Katherine MacLean

Katherine MacLean is a research scientist with expertise in studying the effects of mindfulness meditation and psychedelics. At Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, she conducted legal clinical trials of psilocybin, the primary chemical found in “magic mushrooms”. In 2015, she co-founded and was the first director of the Psychedelic Education and Continuing Care Program in New York (psychedelicprogram.com), where she led training workshops and monthly integration groups focused on increasing awareness and reducing risks of psychedelic use. Episode 57 – Lee McCormick

Lee McCormick has always lived out loud. Born into a tribe of movers and shakers, he was raised between his pioneer family’s farm in Florida where his great grandparents homesteaded during the Civil War, and his Dad’s Wyoming cattle ranch. The boldness of his family and the richness of his heritage made him a passionate man.

In the late ‘70s and ‘80s Lee hit the road as a singer songwriter. Talk about an education, he plunged into the lifestyle head first and headstrong. His tipping point came in 1997 when he (barely) woke up one day, realized he had an out-of-control drug problem and checked himself into rehab. In rehab, he had a profound awakening and set out on a personal quest to find REAL truth and healing in his life. His inward journey took him to Native American and Mesoamerican shamans and healers who opened him up to a universal view of life and a new paradigm for addiction treatment.

In 1998, Lee founded The Ranch Recovery Center in Tennessee and later The Canyon Treatment Center in Malibu California and has been a creative force in the Mental Health and Recovery scene for over 15 years. He founded Spirit Recovery Inc. to produce Healing and Recovery conferences and Spiritual Journeys around the world, and he is a founder in Nashville’s Integrative Life Center and IOP/PHP Community Recovery program in Nashville, Tennessee.

Episode 56 – Liana Sananda Gillooly

Liana Sananda Gillooly is a lifetime activist for social justice, drug policy reform, ending war, and the environment. She is the Development Officer at Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS).

MAPS is the largest non-profit investigating the therapeutic uses of psychedelics. Currently, we are in Phase III FDA trials utilizing MDMA Therapy to treat PTSD. Results have been so promising, it earned the designation of Breakthrough Therapy from the FDA.

In addition to her role at MAPS, Liana is engaged in transformational technology movement, with an interest in VR/AR therapy and emergent blockchain technologies. To highlight the connection between the psychedelic and cryptocurrency community, she instigated the formation of CryptoPsychedelic, an event series that kicked off last February in Tulum and gathers together these communities all over the globe.

Before joining MAPS, Liana worked as Outreach Manager for a prominent cannabis investment and market research firm, The Arcview Group, where she helped grow the accredited investor network, advocated for legalization, and supported the work of Marijuana Policy Project. She has worked in event, festival, and film production, as well as artist representation, art curation, and art creation. She owned a visionary art gallery in Venice Beach, California, called Sananda Gallery. She has produced fundraisers, parties, and art happenings for special events and festivals, including High Times Cannabis Cups, MAPS conferences, Envision Festival, Serenity Festival, and Fractal Planet at Burning Man. She has been a featured speaker at numerous events, lobbied Congress, lectured MBA students, and given a TedX talk. She is an experienced meditator and trained death midwife.

Brian Koch is a musician, artist and founding member of Blitzen Trapper and Dead Lee. Blitzen Trapper is a Portland, Oregon-based experimental country/folk/rock band associated with Sub Pop Records, Vagrant Records and Lojinx. Formed in 2000, the band currently operates as a quintet, with Eric Earley, Erik Menteer, Brian Adrian Koch, Michael Van Pelt, and Marty Marquis. Blitzen Trapper self-released its first three albums. “Wild Mountain Nation” was No. 98 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007.

Charles Eisenstein is a teacher, speaker, and writer focusing on themes of civilization, consciousness, money, and human cultural evolution. Episode 01 – Matt Graham – Survivalist/Earth Skills

Matt Graham was a climber and began studying primitive skills at age 17 in Yosemite Valley. At 20 he was doing search and rescue as a tracker in Sequoia while running and learning to travel the backcountry with no food or gear.
